Summer workshop series: Prepare to launch!

College Readiness

Well, it has happened. Your little person has grown into a young adult and been accepted to college! Congratulations. This transition is a complex one, filled with questions, nerves, anticipation, and excitement (I speak from personal and professional experience)!

Your student has cultivated many wonderful skills and traits to arrive at this place. At the same time, college success requires the development of new, emerging capacities. Does your child feel ready? How ready do you think your child is? Here’s an assessment to explore if you’re interested (it’s geared toward students with learning differences, but most of the ideas apply to all students).

I often hear parents express concern about their child making a successful transition to college. For decades, I’ve worked with students individually on building the toolboxes they’ll need in order to feel prepared and confident as they move through this major transition. This summer, I’ll continue that one-on-one work, but I am also offering a workshop series, “Prepare to Launch”, for students who would like to learn the most important skills together.

Here’s what I’ll cover in this virtual series:

  1. Welcome to college: THE CHANGE…what’s different about college and how to prepare
  2. Know thyself: leveraging self-awareness (as a learner and human) to help you succeed
  3. Self-management skills for college life: time management, organization, and overcoming unhelpful habits
  4. Self-care: balancing academics/work with physical, emotional, and social well-being
  5. Communication and self-advocacy
  6. Safety Nets: knowing, building, and leveraging resources for success (academic and personal)

FAQs

  • When is the deadline to register? Registration form and full payment is due by/before July 1st. (The course cost increases after June 1st.) Click here to register. Payment must be received, in addition to the Google form, in order to hold a spot for your student.
  • Will sessions be recorded? I won’t be recording sessions, due to privacy and the personal nature of information and conversations students may be sharing.
  • What if my student misses a session? If a student needs to miss a session, please let me know. I am unable to provide refunds for missed sessions, but I will provide presentation slides, activities, and handouts.
  • Any specific request for how my child shows up? I ask that all students join the Zoom two minutes prior to our start time, in order to maximize our learning time. I will also request that students keep their cameras on for our sessions. In addition, I ask that all students have extraneous tabs on their computers closed before they log in, as well as removing distracting devices or items in their immediate learning environment, to maximize their focus. I will inform them about this.
  • My child needs to move/stand/fidget/chew gum. That is perfectly fine! As long as it doesn't distract other learners, I want to accommodate your child's learning needs. Also, we will take a brief break, midway through each session.
  • My child needs more individualized attention and deeper work in these areas. Can I work with you individually? Yes--please contact me at info@launchlearning.com to set up a free consultation call, and we can discuss your needs and working on a one-to-one basis.
  • Other questions? Feel free to email me at: info@launchlearning.com
